CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
These pediatric pathology courses, first held in Aspen in 1979 are designed primarily for general and pediatric pathologists, but will be of interest to pediatric oncologists, surgeons and pediatricians as well. Topics are chosen based on a needs assessment including a review of evaluations from previous participants, discussions between course directors, faculty and other pediatric pathologists, and review of articles in current pediatric and pathology journals.
Objectives
1. To present an update of issues in pediatric pathology that may be areas of conflict and/or controversy
2. To provide a framework for the differential diagnosis of common and not-so-common tumors of the liver, kidney, lymphatic system, soft tissues, GI tract, central and peripheral nervous systems and bone, among others.
3. To classify tumors by histologic, molecular and genetic criteria
A microscopic slide set with clinical histories will be sent to the participants prior to the conference and may be kept by them for their files. Some of the cases will be discussed in detail during various faculty presentations and, a syllabus including a case history, diagnosis, slide description, discussion and references for each case will be given to the participants. A conference syllabus with material from each of the formal presentations during the week will also be given to participants.
The faculty will be available to review interesting and unusual cases that individual participants may wish to bring to the conference with them. Microscopes will be available for this purpose.
